Tanggol Quezon condemned PNP Lopez, in coordination with the 85th IB, for the illegal and arbitrary arrest of farmer Anthony Biñas on June 19.
The Quick Response Team (QRT) from Tanggol Quezon searched for Biñas for several days until they located him at the Quezon District Jail on the morning of June 28. He was charged with the fabricated case of attempted murder.
The QRT first went to the Quezon District Jail on June 26 but Biñas was not there. The team went back and forth from Lucena to Lopez and Gumaca and back again to Lucena because of unclear information provided by PNP Lopez, which claimed that Biñas was no longer in their custody.
“The AFP-PNP confuse human rights workers whenever they search for political prisoners, making the quick response team go in circles. This clearly violates the rights of political prisoners,” Tanggol Quezon spokesperson Paul Tagle explained
This kind of incident is not new in the province of Quezon. Reyman Noriesta, a farmer in Lopez, was also arbitrarily arrested on April 6, 2025. The AFP claimed he was a member of a revolutionary group. The military harassed and surveilled Noriesta’s relatives. They also continue to harass their community.
Tanggol Quezon calls for the immediate release of Biñas and other victims charged with fabricated cases by the AFP and PNP.
