Led by the Tanggol Migrante Movement (TMM), organizations in the US thwarted the planned deportation of Filipino migrant Greggy “Kuya G” Sorio by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) colluding with the Philippine embassy on December 7.
Disregarding Kuya G’s illness, the CBP insisted on deporting him on December 7. He suffers from a worsening chronic intestinal disease, bone infection, and breathing difficulty. Bernice Santayana, Assistance To Nationals (ATN) Officer at the Philippine consulate, approved the deportation.
TMM immediately launched a camp-out and hunger strike outside the NorthWest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, Washington to condemn the planned deportation. Organizations led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-USA and Malaya USA also protested at the Philippine consulate in San Francisco.
Seattle mayor Katie Wilson, congress members Emily Randall and Pramila Jayapal, and the Promotion of Church People’s Response-Washington condemned the deportation plan.
TMM healthcare worker members sent videos and reports to the Philippine consulate and Philippine Airlines to explain Kuya G’s worsening health condition. They also launched a protest and noise barrage at the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. According to the group, they aim to make Kuya G feel their support in his struggle even if they could not stop his deportation.
The PAL medical team several minutes later examined and led Kuya G out from the plane because he was found “medically unfit” to travel.
The following day, Kuya G’s lawyers obtained a temporary restraining order from the court barring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from deporting him for two weeks.
According to TMM, these victories were gained from the relentless campaign and actions of the Filipino community and organizations supporting Kuya G. However, the fight continues for his immediate medical treatment and release from NWDC detention.
TMM calls on ICE and NWDC owner Geo Group to hospitalize Kuya G for more comprehensive treatment of his illnesses. The group also urges Ambassador Romualdez and Consul General Neil Ferrer to face the people and address the grievances of Filipino migrants, and demands ATN officer Santayana to resign from her position.
