Environmental groups and other organizations marched from Taft Avenue, Manila to the US Embassy on April 22 to mark Earth Day. The groups denounced the US-Marcos regime for joining “Pax Silica” and held US and Israel accountable for their wars in the Middle East that severely damaged Asian society and environment.
The groups launched their opening program on Taft Avenue and ended along TM Kalaw Avenue where police blocked them.
According to the protesters, foreign corporations and their accomplices in the national bureaucracy benefit from large-scale mining and infrastructure projects that drive people out of their communities and destroy the environment. They favor amassing profit and completely disregard environmental destruction.
Progressive groups in other regions also marked Earth Day.
Fisherfolk and residents of Calabanga and nearby municipalities protested at the People’s Park of Calabanga, Camarines Sur to denounce the planned wind farm in San Miguel Bay.
PAMALAKAYA (Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas or National Strength of the Fisherfolk Movement in the Philippines) launched a fluvial parade to oppose destructive projects that damage the country’s seas, lakes, and coastlines. Fisherfolk carried the call “There are no fish in a dead lake” to show the actual state of their livelihood—gradually disappearing because of reclamation, dredging, windmills, floating solar, and large projects with no adequate consideration for the environment and livelihoods.
