Filipino immigrant who helped dismantle drug syndicate in the US faces deportation

United States officials arrested in July another Filipino immigrant currently detained in the state of Georgia. Sonny Lasquite returned to the US from a vacation in the Bahamas when US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents arrested him at Charlotte International Airport, North Carolina on July 28. Lasquite, 44 years old, has lived in the US for more than two decades.

CBP stated that they arrested Lasquite for a previous case involving illegal drugs in 2012, which had long been resolved. Court documents show that they only gave him a “time served” sentence and fined him $200 after he helped US authorities dismantle an international drug syndicate in the country, leading to the imprisonment of seven people including the group leader.

Lasquite is currently detained at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, which has failed to provide him with appropriate medical care. The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines said he is one of 38 Filipinos currently detained in ICE facilities in the US.

Tanggol Migrante Network expressed support for his release.
