Filipino activists launch people’s state of the nation address in different countries

Led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), Migrante, Gabriela, Anakbayan, and allied organizations, various groups launched their respective People’s State of the Nation Address (PSONA) with the theme “SONAsaan na? SONAgbago ba? (Where has SONA taken us? Did SONA change anything?)” on July 27 and 28 overseas.

The groups discussed in their protests the Filipinos’ real situation in the country and abroad, called for justice for victims of human trafficking in Cambodia, condemned the Trump regime’s anti-immigrant crackdown, pushed for a ₱1,200 peso living wage, asserted migrants’ rights in other countries, condemned the fascist US-Marcos regime’s anti-people policies, and called for Sara Duterte’s prosecution.

In Asia Pacific, protests were held outside the Philippine consulate in Melbourne, Victoria, and in Blacktown, Western Sydney in Australia; on Charter Road Central and outside the Philippine consulate in Hong Kong; in Freyberg Square, Auckland Central Business District and at the Trade Union Center in Christchurch, New Zealand; and in Hyewa-dong in South Korea.

In the US, protests were held outside the Philippine embassy in Washington, DC; outside the Philippine consulates in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California; New York City; and Chicago, Illinois; in Creston Park, Portland, Oregon; and in Seward Park, Seattle.

Protests were also held in Canada at Bathurst-Wilson Parkette in Ontario; Civic Plaza, Surrey Central Station in Surrey, British Columbia; Central Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba; Plaza Byward Market in Ottawa, Ontario; and outside the Philippine consulate in Calgary, Alberta. A discussion and study on PSONA was also held in Montreal, Quebec.

In Europe, protests were conducted outside the Philippine embassy in The Hague, Netherlands; in Berlin, Germany; and London, United Kingdom.
