Ang Bayan Ngayon » PLDT union of supervisors protests anew for CBA

PLDT supervisors relaunched actions to push for meaningful provisions in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) for 2026–2028. The Gabay ng Unyon sa Telekomunikasyon ng mga Superbisor sa PLDT (GUTS-PLDT, or Beacon of the Telecommunications Supervisors’ Union of PLDT) launched what they called a “Jericho Walk” on May 29, two weeks after the first action on May 15.

Protesters gathered at PLDT headquarters in the Central Business District, Makati City. Protests were also held at other PLDT offices nationwide. All attendees wore red shirts.

The action was held concurrently with the day of CBA negotiations between the union and management. Discussions focused on wage increases, expanded labor rights, and stronger protection against dismissals and other retrenchment schemes. The CBA process has been deliberately prolonged and delayed since November 2025.

The union demanded a significant wage increase of 25% or ₱18,000, whichever is higher, for the first two years, and 25% or ₱17,000, whichever is higher, for the third year. They also requested a larger hospital fund for dependents and the implementation of a union shop clause to protect promoted employees.

According to the union, their demanded wage increase is roughly 12% of PLDT’s average annual total income. PLDT Inc. reported a net income of ₱32.31 billion in 2024, 21% higher than 2023 (₱26.61 billion). Earnings recorded in the first three quarters of 2025 were ₱25.1 billion.

PLDT is owned by comprador-bourgeois Manny V. Pangilinan. He is chairman, president and chief executive officer. It is the oldest and largest telecommunications company in the Philippines, offering fixed-line, mobile telephony, broadband and internet of things under brands such as PLDT Home, PLDT Business, PLDT Enterprise, Smart Communications and TNT. It also has subsidiaries and affiliates in other industries including Maya (digital banking) and VITRO Inc. (data center).

The union said the supervisors are prepared to launch a strike if PLDT continues to remain rigid. GUTS-PLDT has 3,962 members, one of the largest unions in the telecommunications industry.
