The Makabayan Bloc in the House of Representatives called Sen. Allan Peter Cayetano’s recent call for a “snap election” to address widespread government corruption a “typical obfuscation of the issue of corruption.” Cayetano pushed for the proposal to replace both executive and legislative branch officials, claiming that the public no longer trusts those in power.
Makabayan representatives said Cayetano’s ploy merely diverts attention away from accountability for corruption and toward a snap election. “This gives the illusion that corruption can only be addressed simply through the electoral process that is still dominated by political dynasties and corrupt politicians,” the group said.
“How will holding snap elections address the issue of accountability? The proposal is a distraction and a way to douse cold water on the people’s protests,” the Makabayan Bloc stated. The group stressed that a snap election would only change office personalities while preserving a system where corruption is deeply rooted.
The Makabayan Bloc favors prosecuting and holding accountable all those involved in corruption—from top to bottom. Within Congress, the Makabayan Bloc continues to expose corruption issues, particularly during hearings for the proposed 2026 budget.
Recently, ACT Teachers Party-list Representative Antonio Tinio revealed before Congress that at least 3,700 additional projects worth ₱214.4 billion were approved by Marcos himself and funded through his unprogrammed allocations (UA) for 2023–2025.
The Makabayan Bloc also continues to support protest actions, noise barrages, walkouts, and other anti-corruption mass mobilizations in recent weeks. Representatives Tinio, Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Sara Elago, and Kabataan Representative Atty. Renee Co have attended these gatherings to deliver messages and express solidarity.
