A unit of the New People's Army under the Apolonio Mendoza Command (NPA-Quezon) staged a sapper operation against the detachment of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) in Barangay Sumalang, Lopez in Quezon province on 16 January.
NPA Red fighters employed a command-detonated explosive (CDX) in this daring early morning attack. Three huts housing the CAFGU members were also destroyed. At least three CAFGU elements of the paramilitary unit and wounding several others. The CAFGU detachment was under the command of the 59th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army.
Meanwhile, Police Officer 3 Diosdado Corilla of the Atimonan Police Office was killed in an ambush launched by an NPA unit last Sunday, 30 January, in Barangay Balubad, Atimonan, Quezon. Corilla was an abusive police victimizing innocent people of Atimonan. The people of Atimonan have long demanded justice for the crimes perpetrated by Corilla.
A special committee was formed by the local revolutionary government to look into complaints against Corilla. The police officer was found to be responsible for the killing last November 13, 2010 of Helario Pantoja a farmer and part-time tricycle driver of Barangay Tagbakin, Atimonan. Pantoja was being accused as a member of the NPA.
Corilla was also found to be responsible for the 8 December 2010 killing of student activist Ryan Perifina, a 17-year old high school student of Leon Guinto Memorial College.
