The National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of BERNARDO SANCHEZ VAZQUEZ, the leader of the Coordinadora de Pueblos Unidos del Valle de Ocotlan (COPUVO) that has strongly opposed the open-pit mining of gold by the Canadian Mining Corporation, Fortuna Silver, Inc. through its local affiliate, Cuzcatlan Mining.

The open-pit mining is carried out in the Community of San Jose del Progreso, Oacotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico.

Bernardo Sanchez Vazquez was brutally murdered at the Crucero de Santa Lucia, Ocotlan, in the night of 15 March 2012 by a paramilitary group in the service of the mining corporation.

Two companions of Bernardo Sanchez Vazquez were seriously injured: Andres Sanchez Vazquez and Rosalinda Dionisio.

The NDFP conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Bernardo Sanchez Vazquez and best wishes for good recovery to Andres Sanchez Vazquez and Rosalinda Dionisio.

The NDFP, in solidarity with the Coordinadora de Pueblos Unidos del Valle de Ocotlan (COPUVO), demand from the Federal Government of Felipe Calderon and the Government of the State of Oaxaca the punishment of those responsible for this horrible crime. The accountability of the Canadian Mining Corporation, Fortuna Silver, Inc. and its subsidiary Cuzcatlan Mining must be investigated.
