Seventy and very much a revolutionary.
For Filipinos around the world, the name Prof. Jose Maria Sison evokes unflinching commitment for national freedom and democracy. It is synonymous to serving the people for indeed; Prof. Sison’s life is about bringing forth the dreams of the oppressed people for a better world.
As Filipinos abroad, we can identify with Prof. Jose Maria Sison in so many ways.
Like the Filipino migrants, the reason for Prof. Sison’s is rooted at the basic problems of Philippine society. While for many of us it was directly because of the grave economic condition in the country, for Professor Sison, it was the fascism of the state that forced him to seek refuge abroad.
His involvement in the revolutionary movement for change has made him one of the top, if not the top, target of prosecution by the succeeding puppet regimes in the Philippines.
We are all aware how the current government of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is trying to move heaven and hell just so it can get its hands on Professor Sison. His analysis and ideas are still very much relevant to the people because they reflect the true condition and aspirations of every oppressed Filipino.
Being forced overseas did not stop Professor Sison from his involvement in the movement for change. His writings have benefited many organizations – including those in the progressive movement of Filipinos overseas – in terms of sharp analyses on burning issues.
We know that Professor Sison shares our dream – the dream of a society where families are not broken up by urgent need for survival. More importantly we also know that Professor Sison is with us as we work for a homeland where there is opportunity for everyone to live a decent and humane life.
