In Honor of Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo

It is with profound sorrow that we, the Negotiating Panel of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), mark the passing of Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo, a distinguished political scientist, committed activist, and esteemed former President of the University of the Philippines. His dedication to the pursuit of social justice and national liberation has left an indelible mark on the Philippine revolutionary movement.

Dodong’s journey as a Marxist intellectual and activist was deeply intertwined with the history of the national democratic struggle in the Philippines. In the early 1960s, Comrade Jose Maria Sison recommended and recruited him into the old Party, where they became close comrades. Their collaboration was instrumental during a critical period when proletarian revolutionaries were repudiating the revisionist leadership of the Lava brothers to reestablish the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Dodong initially remained with the old Party but, becoming disillusioned with its direction, eventually chose to leave.

In a testament to his commitment to the revolutionary cause, it was Dodong who confirmed to Joma the assassination attempt on his life and the disappearance of Comrade Carlos del Rosario, as well as Joma’s elder brother Francisco and his driver. This act exemplified Dodong’s steadfastness and solidarity with his fellow revolutionaries during times of peril.

Beyond his direct involvement in the revolutionary movement, Dodong made significant contributions as an academic and educator. As a professor at the University of the Philippines, he was a favorite among students, drawn to his revolutionary ideas on the subject of politics, Philippine society, and life in general. His tenure as the 18th President of the University of the Philippines from 1999 to 2005 was marked by efforts to modernize the institution and foster critical thought and academic excellence.

His intellectual rigor, courage, and dedication have inspired countless individuals within the revolutionary movement and beyond. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and legacy. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, comrades, and all whose lives he touched. May his memory continue to inspire us in our ongoing struggle for national liberation and democracy.
