After living a militant and honest life, Johannes Jacobus Beentjes or Jan, as he was fondly called, had left us on the 8th of February. Yet, he lives on in our memories.
In loving memory of Jan, a warm tribute to a fighter against injustice.
Jan was a striking man who had left a lot of memories. I would like to pay my respects to his work and to his tireless efforts to fight for justice and for a just society. Above all, he dedicated himself to the struggle for freedom of the Filipino people in the Philippines and of the Filipino political refugees in the Netherlands.
Through his work with Nederlands – Filippijnse Solidariteitsbeweging (NFS) from 2003 to 2007, Jan, a wonderful human being, gave meaning to solidarity with the democratic forces in the Philippines, who have been fighting for a just society. These forces are rooted in the struggles against landlessness, the lack of democracy, and human rights violations.
The major campaign he spearheaded was the campaign to defend Professor Jose Maria Sison. In 2002, Professor Sison was placed in the terrorist list. Jan resolutely decided to take part in the Defend Sison Campaign, which would continue until the unjust placing of Prof. Sison on the list was withdrawn in 2009. Jan’s efforts were inseparably intertwined with this campaign.
Moreover, Jan and his partner Marie were the creators of the NFS’s website. Through them, all the translated works, petitions and newsletters became accessible to a wider public.
Jan’s other work related to Peace, Freedom and Democracy in the Philippines included the action for the release of Parliamentarians and the support to the Second Session of the Permanent People’s Tribunal for the Philippines. Jan also co-founded Rice and Rights network, an alliance to defend the human rights of Filipino people. For several years, Jan had been the treasurer of International League for People’s Struggle (ILPS). ILPS is a global formation of various organizations that fight against imperialist globalization. Until his death, Jan was a member of ILPS – Netherlands chapter.
To Filipinos, he was called Ka Jan, as he was a doting friend of the Filipino people who had linked up arms with them as they build a society free of domination.
Ka Jan deserves to be highly revered. He had done a lot to fight against injustice. His efforts were priceless. Ka Jan sowed the seeds that contribute to a just and sustainable development where progress does not come at the expense of people’s lives, and a society that is based on equality where everyone lives a decent life.
By dedicating ourselves to achieving a society that is based on equality, Jan’s memories will live on forever.

Johannes Jacobus Beentjes, met roepnaam Jan, heeft ons na een strijdbaar en oprecht leven op 8 februari verlaten – maar in onze herinneringen leeft hij voort.
Ter nagedachtenis een eerbetoon aan Jan – een strijder tegen onrecht.
Jan is een gedenkwaardig man die veel herinneringen achter laat. Graag geef ik uiting aan het respect voor de samenwerking en zijn tomeloze inzet voor rechtvaardigheid en een eerlijke samenleving. In het bijzonder heeft hij zich ingezet voor de vrijheidsstrijd van de bevolking in de Filippijnen en de politieke vluchtelingen van daar in Nederland.
Jan, een prettig mens, gaf met de Nederlands-Filippijnse Solidariteitsbeweging van 2003 tot 2007 op praktische wijze inhoud aan solidariteit met de democratische krachten in de Filippijnen die werken aan een samenleving op basis van gelijkheid. Deze krachten vinden hun oorsprong in algemene grieven zoals landloosheid, gebrek aan democratie en schendingen van de mensenrechten.
Jan nam verantwoordelijkheid. Zijn eerste grote project was de vertaling van de 44 pagina’s tellende brandbrief van buitenlandse religieuzen en ontwikkelingswerkers in de Filippijnen.
Vervolgens stond hij samen met zijn partner Marrie aan de basis van de NFS website. Daarmee waren de vertaalde werken, petities en nieuwsberichten toegankelijk voor een breed publiek.
Een volgend groot speerpunt was de campagne ter verdediging van Jose Maria Sison. In 2002 werd Prof. Sison op de terroristenlijst geplaatst. Jan sloot zich resoluut aan bij de Defend Sison campagne. Die campagne zou niet stoppen voordat de onterechte plaatsing van Prof. Sison op de lijst in 2009 werd ingetrokken. Jan’s inzet is daar onlosmakelijk mee verbonden.
Jan’s andere aandachtspunten voor Vrede, Vrijheid en Democratie in de Filippijnen, waren zoal: de actie voor de vrijlating van parlementariërs en steun aan de tweede sessie van het volkerentribunaal voor de Filippijnen. Jan was mede oprichter van het Rice & Rights netwerk – een beweging ter verdediging van de mensenrechten van het Filippijnse volk. Jan was enkele jaren de penningmeester van de International League for People’s Struggle (ILPS). De ILPS is een coalitie van organisaties die zich verzetten tegen de imperialistische globalisering. Tot zijn overlijden was Jan lid van de ILPS afdeling in Nederland.
Voor de Filipinoos heet hij Ka Jan, omdat hij als innige vriend van het Filippijnse volk – samen optrok bij het bouwen aan een samenleving die vrij is van overheersing.
Ka Jan verdient alom respect. Hij heeft een berg werk verzet om onrecht te bestrijden. Zijn inzet is van onschatbare waarde. Ka Jan laat sporen achter die bijdragen aan een rechtvaardige en duurzame ontwikkeling waarbij groei niet ten koste gaat van armoede – een maatschappij op basis van gelijkheid waarbij iedereen een menswaardig inkomen heeft.
Door ons in te zetten voor een maatschappij op basis van gelijkheid blijven de herinneringen aan Jan in leven!
