The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and all revolutionary forces join the Korean people in applauding and celebrating the historic meeting at Panmunjeom between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in last April 27.

The two Korean leaders jointly issued the “Panmunjeom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula” which states that “there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula.” The declaration is a precursor to a formal declaration of an end to the war.

The declaration ends 65 years of armistice and hostility between the two Koreas which came as a result of US imperialist intervention in the Korean Peninsula towards the end of World War II (1945-1954).

The declaration ending war in the Korean Peninsula is a great victory for the Korean people. Their families, long divided by the 38th Parallel, will soon be reunited. The threats of war, which have long hanged above their heads, are now gone. The declaration also calls for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

While the declaration opens the possibility of US and China participation in talks, it affirms “the principle of determining the destiny of the Korean nation on their own accord.” Thus, it bolsters the demand of the Korean people for the dismantling of all US military facilities in the Korean peninsula. It also amplifies the clamor for an end to US-led sanctions against North Korea.

The Panmunjeom Peace Declaration is a heavy slap against the US imperialists. While the entire world celebrates the declaration, the US government and issued statements questioning North Korean measures to end nuclear tests which has the effect of undermining the declaration and Korean efforts to achieve denuclearization.
