16th IB abducts Camarines Norte peasant organizer

The 16th IB soldiers abducted peasant organizer Faye Margarette Tallow in Barangay Malibago, Labo, Camarines Norte on September 4. Karapatan-Bicol reported that the military raided and abducted her from the house she has been staying.

The group stated that Tallow’s location remained unknown two days after the incident. Karapatan-Bicol and the peasant communities organized by Tallow feared for her safety, since they knew the brutality of the 16th IB under the command of Lt. Col. Warren Daroy.

Under the Marcos regime, units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) typically resort to abducting and illegally detaining activists and organizers on unclear grounds. In the three years of the regime, at least 15 victims of the dirty tactic of enforced disappearance had been recorded.

Tallow was a former student of the College of Media and Communication (CMC, formerly College of Mass Communication) at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. She served as Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights (STAND) UP-CMC chairperson.

At the university, Tallow led various student campaigns inside CMC such as resisting the oppressive Faculty Student Relations Committee (FSRC) Manual. She also helped build strong unity to scrap the Socialized Tuition System in UP. Tallow also firmly stood for press freedom.
